Dr. Van Klooster

Welcome to Dr. Van Klooster's Social Studies and ELD Classes.

"The journey of a thousand miles begins with the first step." That journey in my Social Studies class starts with a fifteenth to eighteenth century review and then focuses on the foundation and development of the United States.  Areas covered include pre-colonial times, The Constitution, The Age of Jefferson and Jackson, the South, the Civil War and the growth of industry.  We will be taking a world wind ride from 1900 to 2007 in the last three weeks of the class.  History has been my passion ever since I was a little boy and I hope to instill some of that passion if I am fortunate enough to have your child in my class.

I also teach a section of English Language Development (ELD) and serve as the school's coordinator for that program.  We currently have seventy-two students who are in the ELD program.  Students range from beginning to advanced speakers based on their proficiency on the California English Language Test.  The course which I teach is designed for students who are beginning to intermediate in their overall English language skills.  Class size is kept small so that more attention could be focused on individual learning needs, regular interaction and achieving monthly academic goals.  It is a pleasure working with such a diverse student body in the ELD class as well as in the Social Studies class.

As for some personal information about me, I was born in Burlingame, California and have lived in the Los Angeles area for the last thirty-five years. I received a B.A. in Political Science from UCLA (1986), a M.A. from CSULA (1993) and a Doctorate from Pepperdine (2002).  I have taught in Culver City and Torrance as well as have been an administrator at several levels.  From my various experiences, Casimir Middle School is a wonderful place for your child to receive an education.

If you have any questions about your child in my Social Studies or ELD class, please feel free to contact me at 310-533-4498 x4731 or by email at  Class syllabus, policies, standards and course goals and objectives will all be shared when your child enters my class.  Welcome to a great place!
